Server Move Complete – New Look

Welcome to the new Bwana.org (DNS changes still propagating). For months I’ve been putting up with sporadic uptime due to increased traffic and an overworked virtual private server at Dreamhost. I’ve switched providers to Mosso (The Rackspace Cloud), and am utilizing their Cloud Sites product. Yes, this is a more expensive solution than what I’m currently paying at Dreamhost, but I’m a big believer in “you get what you pay for”. I considered a lot more options out there and what drew me to Mosso was it’s great reputation and scaling solution. I also had a good conversation with Robert La Gesse of Mosso who took the time to answer a lot of my questions. As a result of the more expensive solution, I’m opening up advertising on my sites for anyone interested. Email me for more information.

We’ll see how things go here at Mosso, and I hope you all enjoy the new look and feel. I figured since I’m moving from a long time relationship with Dreamhost (since 2005!), I’d accompany it with a new look and feel. Thanks everyone for your patience and let me know if you experience any kind of issues with the new site. I look forward to providing more content without the fear of server death.

Over the next few days, I will be transitioning braytek to my business side of things and moving my blog over to bwana.org. I apologize in advance for the expected downtime and quirks.

upcoming changes

braytek.com is undergoing some changes and i felt i should share these with my readers so that when they happen, you won’t be caught off-guard:

site breakout – with the formation of braytek,llc recently, i will be moving my blog to a different subdomain, probably something like blog.braytek.com. my podcast will most likely get its own subdomain as well.
feed url changes – as a result of the site shuffle, some feed urls may change. i will handle the podcasting side pretty easily, but those of you subscribing to www.braytek.com/feed/… will probably not be able to use that url anymore. stay tuned. (i know, i hate changing feed urls)
braytek,llc will be the focus of www.braytek.com and it will be strictly business. stay tuned for its release and details.
braytek podcast might need a name change. in order to avoid confusion of what braytek stands for, the podcast may get an overhaul for naming. stay tuned.

sub with feedlounge bookmark

so i’m still geeked about feedlounge. i replaced my “sub with bloglines” button with “sub with feedlounge”. i basically editted the source code and changed the bloglines url to the feedlounge one used with their button generator. it’s a little “stupid” right now as it can’t automagically check for rss urls on the page like the bloglines one did, but it was smart enough for a couple of sites i tried (seems to go with the default rss link). want it?

bandwidth theft

i’ve had enough. i’ve updated my server config to give you bandwidth thieves a nice surprise instead of what you tried to nab. if you are getting the surprise through some aggregator or some valid usage, let me know and i’ll update my configs to allow it. meanwhile, all you thieves learn how to host your own images.

as a consequence, i’m faced with this dilemna.

braytek site redesign

as you may have noticed, i have redesigned braytek.com. i hope you enjoy the changes. the theme i’m using is based on the “a garden apart” css design from csszengarden.com. if you haven’t visted csszengarden yet, then what are you waiting for?!? there are some incredible designs over there just waiting for you to use.

wordpress 2.0 released

as promised, the fine folks over at wordpress released version 2.0 of their blogging software to public on december 26th. i have installed 2.0 on braytek.com and it is working fine so far. the new features (mainly the admin interface) is a refreshing change. there’s little things they fixed/added that makes the blogging experience pleasant. i wish they would add more of the advanced editting features for safari, but oh well. i’ll just continue to use the plugin for such. if you want to take it for a test drive, go create an account on wordpress.com. they are running 2.0 on the servers now.

if you are upgrading your server, be sure to read to upgrade instructions and also check to see if your favorite plugins support the new release. enjoy!

i’ve expanded choices for the braytek podcast for those of you who are big fans of ogg vorbis (ogg) audio files and those of you who are big fans of bittorrent (points to mp3 file). starting with episode 12, the braytek podcast will be available in the formats. here are the links to each respective feed:

meblogging via technorati tags

so i’m really caught up in this technorati tag thing and i stumbled across seanbonner’s “experiment” with an idea called “meblogging”. basically it allows you to create your own area in technorati based on your own tag. for instance, i’ve created a ‘braytek’ tag for all my del.icio.us and flickr entries so now i have an area in technorati for the braytek tag. kinda hard to explain, but check out my tag area here and you’ll see what i mean.

the site doesn’t have any posts yet but my del.icio.us links and flickr images have already made their way over. as time passes, all of my entries should show as i’m adding a braytek tag to everything. we’ll see how it goes.

rebirth

so after completely dropping the ball on bloghost‘s decision to go out of business, i have resurrected braytek courtesy of dreamhost. unfortunately (giant sigh), i was unable to get a copy of my files before they went offline. i have emailed them regarding this but i’m not holding my breath.
