Take2/Rockstar Bans Live Streaming Of Red Dead Redemption [Updated]

It’s no secret that I stream video games live at http://justin.tv/bwana. I give my live input and receive live feedback from viewers. As a result, it has influenced a great many on their decision to purchase the game or not. Whether it be visuals, gameplay, interface, etc, a live stream of a game is a great way to get a glimpse of what the game is about.

This is why it saddens me to hear the news today from Justin.TV staff that Take 2 has issued DMCA takedowns for ALL live streams of Red Dead Redemption. Michael Siebel, JTV CEO, has been on the phone with Take 2 attempting to make a case for live streamers, but as of now, all live streams will be taken down using copyright holder tools provided by JTV to Take 2. Several live streams have already been banned. This is not JTV banning users, this is Take 2.

A company this stupid doesn’t deserve my business.

I regret buying the game. I highly encourage you to express your concern to take two by visiting this link if you disagree with their latest actions.

iPhone = Potato

I’m getting a lot of feedback both from my readers, on twitter, on forums and around the web, that iPhone coverage is too much. What can I say? I’m a part of it. If you’re tired of iPhone news, here’s a suggestion: Replace the word “iPhone” with “potato” in every story you read from here on out. Here, let me help you out. Here’s TUAW’s story on the iPhone battery replacement plan, remixed:

Apple released information on the potato battery’s warranty today, as well as the cost of a replacement.

Out of the box, your potato battery is covered for 1 year. Apple intends to release Apple Care for potato sometime this summer (allegedly). Customers of Apple Care for potato will be entitled to a new battery IF the one they’re using drops to below 50% of capacity before their Apple Care runs out.

Otherwise, a new one will cost you $79US. One other note: Apple states that they get rid of dead batteries in “…an environmentally-friendly manner.” So don’t get all excited, Greenpeace.

Fans, we know it looks painful, and haters, we know you’re loving it, but we should all have a little sympathy for the unlucky guy who made this mess completely by accident when he tried to answer his potato while it was still plugged in, causing the short cable to whip Apple’s glass-screened device right out of his hands. Don’t fret too much though, because the kind folks at Apple apparently replaced the smashed potato for free, and as far as we know, the gentleman learned several valuable lessons.

So I added a few more potatoes, so what. So people, please, relax. It’s just a phone. It’s just a stupid phone. Not a religion, not global warming, not health care, but a stupid phone. a day without feedlounge

since feedlounge has undergone maintenance pretty much the entire day, i have been without my favorite feed reader. the old saying goes, “you never miss a good thing until it’s gone”. yeah well, i miss feedlounge..i refuse to go back to bloglines as it’ll be similiar to going back to black & white television. it’s just something you don’t do. what’s going on in tech news? i have no clue. what’s the top stories of today? i have no idea. why? because i heavily depend on my rss feeds for this information. i refuse to open 10 tabs to various news sites again! i’d rather stay ignorant! bah!

the referees made some bad calls on key plays. not a seahawk nor steelers fan, but bad calls are bad calls. here’s a comment i put on a newsvine discussion that sums up my feelings:

I thought I was the only one who noticed bad calls on key plays. Good to know I’m not. No, I’m not a Seattle fan, but I know a bad call when I see it:

1. Pushing off in the endzone? Questionable. But how about being consistent? Hines Ward blantantly did it on about 2 or 3 catches. Watch the game again, It’s sad. Touchdown called back. That’s 7 points.
2. Steelers QB touchdown. It didn’t cross the plane. You could tell the referee was unsure because he initially signaled it as down and then put up his other hand to say Touchdown. The review was enough to overturn it. That’s a 7 point gift to the Steelers.
3. Holding? Nope. Not even close. Ball was on the 1 yard line. Let’s be conservative and say they only got a field goal. That’s 3 points.
4. Low block foul on a tackle? Impossible. Gave them 15 yards and momentum.

10 points and a 7 point gift is a lot when you lose by 11.

I’ll agree that the Seahawks pretty much played like garbage for the most part, but it’s tough to win the biggest game of the year when the referees make these kind of mistakes. Oh well, congrats to the Steelers, they’re the champs no matter what we say.

a lot of seahawks will never make it to the superbowl again. it really must hurt to leave wondering what could have been if the referees didn’t make those mistakes.

upsurge in pc vs mac debates

have you all noticed the upsurge in pc vs mac debates on the web? usually around macworld, the debates are refueled since apple usually announces something new, but this year it’s a bit abnormal. i think i know why:

the line between macs and pcs is not so discrete anymore.

with the introduction of intel macintoshes, both pcs and macs have a more common architecture under the hood. what does this do? it causes the the pc (most pc and windows users) supporters to compare the new apple hardware to cheaper so-called “equivalent” hardware. on the other side, it causes active mac supporters (commonly referred to as “zealots”) to actively defend apple’s “quality package” which is usually the reason for investment. some have used the reasoning that a “computer is a computer” which means that both tools accomplish the same thing. basically along the lines of saying “a tool is just a tool”. from my experience, the more complex tools become, the greater the probability that they will NOT behave similarly.

i refuse to turn this into a pc vs mac debate but i will say this. people will use what they prefer and they will rationalize their choice until the cows come home. humans get accustomed to certain ways and usually changing these ways is not preferred. if you ever get into a pc vs mac argument, please consider that it’s possible that no matter what you say, it will not convince the other party that your computer is better for them. and that’s the truth.

kecia and i recently got back from our local compusa store pretty frustrated. due to insanely bad customer service, we decided to get the products elsewhere and let them know about it. i sent the following letter to compusa via their website customer service feedback form. i’m going to follow up with this and make sure the manager there is dealt with:

At approximately 4:30PM, July 30, 2005, you lost a $1659.97 sale due to negligence and bad customer service. I’ll explain: My wife and I were browsing your store and already had the following items in hand:

Lacie d2 16x External USB/Firewire DVDRW Drive – $159.99
WD 80GB Hard Drive – $99.99

We were looking at purchasing the following video card which was locked in a cabinet:

ATI Radeon X800XL AGP – $250.00

After asking from assistance from a rep in the Technical Services dept, he immediately paged a “manager” to come unlock the cabinet. After 25-30 minutes of waiting (yes I timed it), and the gentlemen from Technical services exclaiming “he’s still not here???” a few times AND my wife asking 2 other associates, my patience was pretty much destroyed. My wife and I noticed a gentleman in a white CompUSA t-shirt walk past us several times (I counted 2, my wife said the same) without even acknowledging our presence. No “I’ll be with you in a minute” or “I apologize for being late, I’m busy, etc”.. nothing. So when we found out that HE was the manager who had been paged, we put our items back on the shelf and left the store. We will purchase them elsewhere. He then began to get an attitude with us saying that he’s the only manager on duty and he’ll help us NOW. Why should I care about that? I’ve been standing in the same spot for over 30 minutes waiting for him to put a key in a lock, turn it, and slide a glass door. Highly unacceptable.

So please note this and the manager on duty. If there were 2 of me each day that leaves out of frustration, that would cost you $3,319.94 a day, and $23,239.58 a week due to complete negligence. I have been a loyal customer for many years now and am saddened that I have to leave your store, but enough is enough. There are too many other options available to go through this kind of nonsense. I had also planned on picking up a new Sony Vaio RB44G Minitower ($1,149.99) from the same store, but I will order my products online instead. Do you really think this kinda of behavior is worth $1,211,778.10 a year? I know I don’t.
