Will Apple Kill Palm’s Hype “Pre”maturely?

In: apple

7 Jun 2009

Pun intended.

So Palm had it’s big day yesterday (June 6th) with their release of the Palm Pre and early reports are that they had a good day in terms of sales. Most stores were sold out by noon and others followed later in the day. Early reviews of the Palm Pre are generally positive and the community is rallying behind Palm in a big way.

We’ve also had some controversy surrounding the Pre already! First, we found out that the Palm Pre is recognized as an iPod in iTunes for synchronization. A lot of us don’t think Apple will like this, especially since a lot of former Apple engineers worked on this phone. Some high profile technology experts have gotten into it surrounding ethics and integrity surrounding receiving review units. Right or wrong, Palm gets free press out of all of this.

Press is good, until you’re faced with an Apple keynote. Even though it’s a Steve Job-less keynote (maybe), tomorrow’s kickoff of Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) is expected to bring a lot of fresh technology news. Now if Apple didn’t have a particular phone in their lineup, I think Palm wouldn’t have to worry about the possible buzz kill surrounding the Pre. But alas, we have a confirmed release of iPhone 3.0 software (either tomorrow or later this month) and a ton of rumors surrounding new iPhone hardware.

On top of all the coolness that’s coming from the iPhone’s software revision, we’re hearing rumors about the new iPhone hardware that include:

  • Video recording capability
  • Front and rear camera
  • Larger Capacity (32GB)

You gotta love the rumor mill before these Apple events. They almost have the ability to kill Palm’s hype on their own. Palm has their hands full. Apple still has the mind share on the “cool” smartphone market, but I believe Palm has what it takes to steal some of it. A new Apple phone 2 days after your release could be insurmountable.

Will tomorrow’s announcements squash Palm’s buzz? We will have to wait and see. I can’t wait. :)

    Hi Bwana!

Word on the street is that Apple moved up the hardware release date from July 17 to June 8 solely to steal the Pre’s thunder. And that means there may be a shortage, as only one of the three expected waves of shipments has arrived yet. The Pre looks interesting – I still may be tempted but I’m waiting for the new iPhone (even though I’ve got a 3G one). Palm had no choice but to launch the Pre before the WWDC; one way or another, Apple will always steal the thunder. The Pre has to bust out of the geek zone if it’s to be as cool a product as the iPhone.

BTW, have you seen the latest CultofMac post?

I don’t think so, but I own an iPhone and I just posted my video of the experience of getting a Pre in line yesterday. This is truly good for all consumers, competition makes it better for all of us. http://bit.ly/13tGwI

You guys think so? I’m not so sure yet. I’m leaning towards yes due to Apple’s track record this time of year. If there’s no new hardware announcement, I think Palm will be in better shape. But as we’ve all seen in a bunch of a different places, new hardware is expected :)

I would be shocked if Apple didn’t release hardware. I mean the contracts for the original iPhone will be expiring soon and Apple needs something to get people to stay. New hardware, exactly what they need.

I do not believe that the iPhone will kill the Pre – room exists for all competitors despite the Apple fanboys. The Pre exclusive running out in 2009 is big for Palm as Verizon users who do not want to switch will be able to buy a Pre, etc etc. I switched from AT&T to Sprint for the Pre because I wanted it more than any current or new iPhone.

Apple’s app store and probably new hardware tomorrow will keep the iPhone going strong, but I doubt it will completely kill Palm’s hype. I think it can co-exist, but it will probably lose some momentum if Steve pull out his magic hat.. on monday

I think that Apple’s marketing hype will crush the Pre’s, given that there will be new hardware.

I agree, but I think that the Pre will be the side note on the iPhone press this Monday, especially on the mainstream press. Side note: I just switched to FF from Twitter, and these live comments make me wonder why I ever used Twitter.

I might buy a Pre if it doesn’t take until Christmas for the phone to come out in the Netherlands..

You might be sick of hearing me say it, Bwana… :-) but I think as long as people are mentioning Pre in the same sentence as iPhone, it’s a win for Palm. If everybody just quits talking about the Pre tomorrow, that’s a problem, but if the converasation continues to be "does this kill the Pre", it doesn’t.

I do not know that it will kill the hype – I imagine the two will be compared etc – even with new hardware Apple will need some cool tricks to top the webOS etc. That’s just me.

but Web OS is imho much more advanced that an Apple’s current iPhone OS withs easy card switching of apps and its automatic snycing with FB and Google.. Apple will have to poop out the iTable to kill the Pre’s hype…

But WebOS is weak in comparison to the iPhone OS due to all of the apps developed for the iPhone.

yup, you got me there.. but i believe if the Pre is a succes, developers will come.. and I’m looking pure at the OS…

I’m not sick of it kshep, it’s a valid point. A big reason why I brought it up is because it could really help or hurt palm in my opinion. We know after Apple events, they usually dominate news. We’ll see tomorrow

Yes, and the WebOS would have crushed the iPhone 1.0 software if it was released near the same time.

We sorta have to keep in mind what success means for Palm here… it’s *not* "killing" the iPhone. It’s selling Pres as fast as they can make them. Nothing else really matters.

I doubt that Apple will allow Background Process. They are so proud of the Push Notifications.

@Mister but how are you truly going to multitask on the iPhone *without* true background processes.. push notifications are overated.. tell that to Phil Schiller

I don’t think so honestly. If i can base anything off of my oblivious tech mom she has had heard of the pre and is really excited about it. As for the Apple conference she has no idea about it and probably could honestly care less

I don’t like the idea of Push Notifications, I just don’t see Apple allowing the hit to battery life. I mean my battery dies in about an hour of streaming internet radio with the screen turned off.

I’m withholding judgement until I actually use Push Notifications. I’ll admit, that’s the biggest need I have at the moment for background apps… that and Pandora…

I recently saw the push implimentation of beehive Im and it’s not as smooth as the pre or android showing them in the background integrated in the os. It works, but it’s not as pretty

Now, I don’t mean to fully judge based on this. It may be a flaw on the developer’s side. I’ve only really tried this with one app which is TWiT.am; has anybody else had this problem?
