18 May 2009Having come from Ustream.TV, I found Justin.TV to be a different live streaming experience than what I was used to. Thanks to the help of seasoned users such as jrblaze, I was able to create a decent channel of my own. I used Justin.TV in the past, but I felt loyal to Ustream since they integrated IRC so well. Since Ustream has dumped IRC and I continue to have issues with them, I decided to go Justin.TV for a while and see how things pan out.
I’ve been impressed so far.
It isn’t the feature set (which is impressive) that intrigues me, but it’s the stability. On Ustream, I couldn’t go a week without issue. My stream would crash, lose connectivity, or fail in the middle of a crucial recording. I haven’t had one issue on Justin.TV yet. Not one. This is why when I heard about Justin.TV pro accounts, I decided to try it for a month. These guys have put together great technology that seems to work very well. I’ll gladly give them $10 based on the couple of weeks of stable usage I’ve gotten out of the deal.
I know the main features pro accounts gives you is less ads, gifts, and an attention grabbing “pro” tag in chat, (the attention is not always good) but my main motivation behind buying a pro account was to thank Justin.TV for easing the pain that Ustream.TV has caused me. I love Ustream, and the guys over there are great, but I consistently had issues that I don’t have at Justin.TV with the same exact hardware. I’m hoping Ustream works out their issues, because I’d love to return, but for now, I’m happily streaming at Justin.TV as a pro user. Come by and check me out. I’m going to give the Pro account a month to see how it all works out and I’ll decide on whether I want to keep it after then. For now, I’m a happy camper over at Justin.TV.

I have to agree. While I’m very grateful for the GUI update on Ustream (much slicker) there’s a real community on Justin.tv. It took Ustream so long to implement channels and I’m still convinced they don’t quite work. Justin.tv got it right first.
While Justin.tv is probably aimed at the youth of the internet, you can’t deny there will be people to watch your channel than with Ustream (from personal experience). And for someone who just likes to watch video game play throughs, J.tv is the place for that

Agreed. J.TV is the place for the younger crowd, and I do like watching the games as well

Pro accounts are B.S. There are too many perverts and pedos on JTV. Every young girl’s channel is full of kids asking these girls to get naked, show feet, show bra and show panties. JTV doesn’t due crap about these webcamsex chats.

Why should I support a website that sponsors broadcaster that i called Eastcoast Vegas. He is a racist and always talks about fat people and blacks. This guy had dozens of complaints for the past 2 years and each time I wonder into his channel, he is showing a fat black person and making fun. They never ban this guy.

I love ustream. I agree with you Bwana about their problems. It pains me to see a company that I want to be loyal to, give me so many reasons to not to. I haven’t crossed to the darkside of jtv(hehe) but I think something needs to change. The ads on the streams over at ustream are really hurting them, and watershed just seems to expensive for certain uses.

I disagree strongly with you. I used to be a jtv user. I quit of having an account there, mainly because is quiet unfair the treat some broadcasters and viewers received there.
The site is full of perverts, old men that want to see teenager girls on stream, many of these girls highly distubed (attention grabbers). Admins are full of themselves, caring more about having power over others than interested in helping you.
And Bwana, of course pro accounts aren’t well received.
I don’t think is your case. But many broadcasters there, broadcast other stuffs than their work(movies, series, etc.) and they get shutt down for copyright issues, but jtv still charge you for your pro account. They are collecting money with somebody else work and effort. If you are broadcasting and your vierwer’s number is high than 1k, an annoying sign will cut the stream and ask you to buy a pro account.
You should do a research about an incident that happened on jtv last year, wasn’t jtv fault but they should worry more about that kind of things than copyright issues, in my opinion.
Anyway, enjoy your stay there, I met a couple of good friends at jtv. None of them hang at jtv these days.

Is Justin.TV that good? I have a live streaming DJ project to do. Maybe I choose Justin.TV?

What happened. Last summer, Justin.tv was the pits. I couldn’t deal with dropped or lagging feeds. Now the same thing is happening with Ustream.

Not much. Mogulus (livestream.com) has great tools (studio is unmatched), but j.tv offered better quality options. Right now, quality and stability trumps the studio features for me. I’m still open to ustream if they fix their issues.
