Usually, Apple nails product designs, but today’s announcement of the new iPod Shuffle has revealed a few features that may deter some users from trying the new model. My first impression was that the thing was very, very small:
The other concern I have is moving the controls to the earphones. Normally this wouldn’t bother me, but these are the only controls, which means you must use Apple’s headphones. Not good. I’m sure these will sell, but I’m thinking this new model may not be for me. I had been considering a shuffle as an alternative to my iPhone for rugged tasks. (Yard work, home repair, and the like). Something tells me Apple may not be sure about it either since they are still offering the old model. A rarity with Apple and iPods.
On the plus side, the capacity increase to 4GB is welcomed. I use close to 4GB of space for music on my iPhone, so that would draw me in. The VoiceOver feature sounds clumsy, but I’ll reserve judgement for that until I can actually use it. With VoiceOver, the iPod Shuffle supports multiple playlists, but the process doesn’t sound easy.
If you get a new iPod Shuffle, let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Don't like it. No controls on the unit itself is a poor idea. At least they kept the clip. I'm surprised this one ever made it past the idea stage.

Yeah, it's such a bad idea, it almost seems like an experiment ^_^

Agreed, and as a further comment on my tweet (I'm timmontech). I am a big fan of being able to do multiple things with one device AND not having to worry about storage space. My Archos 605 has 160GB of storage which easily holds all my music and most of my movies. It has a 4.3" touchscreen which is great to use for interaction but still lets it fit in my front pocket… I had an iPod Mini, and iPod Video, and a Zune, but the Archos is perfect for me. Plus it acts like a big thumb-drive when I plug it in, which means I can use it to transfer files or give someone a few songs from my music collection.
This thing makes me laugh. I watched the Apple demo vid just to listen to her say "The iPod Shuffle is easy to control…". then laughed when she explained how you skip songs, change playlists, and use any kind of advanced feature. This isn't apple's best idea IMO. they should've kept the same form factor as the 2nd Gen or something similar and just bumped up the storage space. the click wheel-esque controls are at least familiar and don't require you to bring the product manual with you just to remember how to skip to the beginning of a song.

Small isn’t necessarily bad. It’s also relative. The latest shufffle is still bigger than the Mobi Blue Cube.

i just read at engadget that third-party iPod shuffle (3rd gen) headphones will require Apple-licensed authentication chip. Wow Apple… really?
