Quicksilver Shines

Date November 9, 2007

Every operating system has its one (debatable) killer app for most people. Microsoft Windows has Microsoft Office, Linux has Apache, Mac OS X has Quicksilver. What is Quicksilver you ask?

Quicksilver is a computer utility software program for Mac OS X, made by Blacktree Software and distributed freely. It allows users to use the keyboard to rapidly perform tasks such as launching applications, manipulating files and data, running scripts or sending e-mail.

On the surface, most people mistake Quicksilver as a mere application launcher. This is a huge misconception because Quicksilver can do just about any action on your operating system, launching applications is a very very small port.

One aspect of Quicksilver that is not well known is the Constellation menu plugin. This menu provides a radial menu of actions for applications. It really shines with the iTunes application as you able to browse and launch various assets of iTunes such as playlists, genres, artists, etc. Constellation is for those Quicksilver users who may want to use the mouse every now and then, but want a different view of data. I highly recommend giving it a try.
