The iPhone Price Drop Issue

In: apple|ipod

5 Sep 2007

The iPhone price dropped from $599 to $399 after being on the market for about 60 days. There are many that are calling those of us who bought it at $599 “suckers” and we shouldn’t complain since that’s the price of early adopters. I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to disagree for one reason, and one reason only:

It’s not the price drop itself that’s upsetting, it’s how quickly it was done.

Understand? It’s really that simple. If Apple doesn’t do a refund/credit, then I’ll eat the price difference, but I’ll never forget this. A price drop after only 2 months is a ridiculous.

I doubt that they’ll refund you, thems being big corporations and all, no matter how much we love them…

Having said that, it’s probably good in the long run that the price dropped, because I think everyone was pretty resoundingly agreed on the fact that 600 was way too high. I think the ideal price point for a device like this is 250-300, which is probably about cost, but they’re making a killing on the service… soo, yeah.

Bwana, I agree with you. Being on the bleeding edge, we know we’ll all be cut sometime. The price goes down. New features are added. Ouch, it hurts. But it’s not that Apple reduced the price, as you say, but how soon it happened. It’s my belief that Jobs and Apple are going for the kill for this Christmas season and nothing is going to get in the way, so now everything is lined up all nice and pretty. New iPods. The iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. A reduced-price (but now affordable) iPhone. All just in time for Santy Claus. Keep up the good work, dude.

Good job on doing a podcast on this issue Bwana. I got my 8GB iPhone for free but still think what Apple did was in bad form. The iPhone hasn’t even been updated yet and here they’ve dropped the 4GB model and cut the price by $200 on the 8GB model… all in 8 WEEKS. That is terrible. Not a good way to treat early adopters.
