sad day at superbowl 40

the referees made some bad calls on key plays. not a seahawk nor steelers fan, but bad calls are bad calls. here’s a comment i put on a newsvine discussion that sums up my feelings:

I thought I was the only one who noticed bad calls on key plays. Good to know I’m not. No, I’m not a Seattle fan, but I know a bad call when I see it:

1. Pushing off in the endzone? Questionable. But how about being consistent? Hines Ward blantantly did it on about 2 or 3 catches. Watch the game again, It’s sad. Touchdown called back. That’s 7 points.
2. Steelers QB touchdown. It didn’t cross the plane. You could tell the referee was unsure because he initially signaled it as down and then put up his other hand to say Touchdown. The review was enough to overturn it. That’s a 7 point gift to the Steelers.
3. Holding? Nope. Not even close. Ball was on the 1 yard line. Let’s be conservative and say they only got a field goal. That’s 3 points.
4. Low block foul on a tackle? Impossible. Gave them 15 yards and momentum.

10 points and a 7 point gift is a lot when you lose by 11.

I’ll agree that the Seahawks pretty much played like garbage for the most part, but it’s tough to win the biggest game of the year when the referees make these kind of mistakes. Oh well, congrats to the Steelers, they’re the champs no matter what we say.

a lot of seahawks will never make it to the superbowl again. it really must hurt to leave wondering what could have been if the referees didn’t make those mistakes.

The ball definitely crossed the plane, that much was certain. The other calls wouldn’t have effected the outcome enough to have changed who won.

Steelers controlled the game, plain and simple.

The Seahawks should have never put themselves into a situation where they could blame the refs. And, I doubt you’ll hear them blame the refs.

I guess he had the same view as the ref, while the rest of us saw the truth.

I disagree Colin. There were key plays that were momentum changers and ultimately lead to the nail in the coffin. Most notably the string of plays that started from the bad holding call. This was the Seahawk’s big push and the Steelers knew it. The bench was notably down (according to Madden) until the interception. One guy on newsvine said it best:

“The game was lost by bad calls. The game sucked because the bad calls caused the Seahawks to take risks and get sloppy.”

Momentum is everything and the Seahawks could not regain it with the help of bad calls from the refs. Would the Seahawks have won if the refs were better? No one knows, but I think it would have been a lot easier for them close the gap on the scoreboard, if not take the lead.

“Steelers controlled the game, plain and simple.”

Which Steelers? Ben Roethlisberger was awful. Aside from Parker’s 75 yard run, the Steelers’ running game was non-existent.

Seattle simply outplayed the Steelers. The better team did not win. And I say this as someone who thought, before the game, that the Steelers were the better team and would win it.

Wow. Bitter much? Love sports when people start blaming calls. Forget the fact that both teams had incredible years. Both teams deserved to win. Both teams had the chance to win. Blaming calls is pretty lame.

A team should never ever put themselves in the position to blame calls.

If the Seahawks won, in the exact same fashion, I would never blame the calls. Because that could be done all year long. The officials are just men, not perfect.

The calls made were one sided whether the seahawks would have won or not. if you make crap calls you need to do it to both sides. the fact of the matter is that that every game ever played in the nfl is affected directly by the calls of the officials. the good calls made by officials are the ones that are so apparent it would make you stand up during the game and yell pass interference or holding or facemask. i saw none of these calls during super bowl 40. what i did see was a jerk with a flag that only came out when the seahawks ended up in the end zone

Bad calls were made and good calls were made but what about the no call’s.
For you Seahawk fans, the interception when the Steelers were going to score again was returned to mid field setting up the Seahawks touchdown. Ben is decked from behind.
The “no calls” kept the Seahawks in the game.
