boycotting walmart

In: news from the web

14 Dec 2005

i’ve had it.

i’m sick of walmart harrassing minority customers as they leave the store. it happens all the time. i’m a very passive person and i don’t usually stir up controversy. but in this case, i’ve lost all patience with wal-mart.

i’m not sure if most of you know about this recent story where wal-mart harrassed this man for attempting to buy $13,000 worth of gift cards for his company. a company which in the past, didn’t have any issues with the purchase when a white woman bought them:

GAF has been spending about $50,000 a year on gift cards at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 11110 Causeway Blvd. in Brandon. For years GAF sent a white, female administrator to buy them without incident. This time, when she was on vacation the day before Thanksgiving, Pitts did the job himself. He phoned in the order for 520 cards, got the accounting department to issue Wal-Mart a $13,600 check and then encountered a royal hassle trying to exchange it for gift cards at the store.

“For a while there I thought I was going to prison,” he said. “It was a totally humiliating experience.”

For about two hours, store managers stalled on accepting the check for the already-printed gift cards, while Pitts stood waiting by the customer service desk. He had handed over his GAF business card, his driver’s license and the toll-free numbers to GAF’s bank. His accounting supervisor assured them over the phone that GAF, the nation’s biggest roofing systems maker with revenues of $1.6-billion in 2004, was good for the check.

full story here. this year, my siblings and my immediate family will be boycotting walmart this holiday season. if they don’t adjust their attitude towards minorities in stores, we will continue to boycott them until they do. i have personally been searched several times as i exit the store while others walk through the door and the alarm goes off!! and nobody lifts a finger. haven’t spent thousands of dollars at walmart over the years, i hope others join me in this.

braytek, walmart, boycott, racism

hey, i was in walmart this morning to get some ceral and milk and junk and as i was leaving just as sho as i am black the alarm and whistles went off and everybody looking at me, then you know what happened next a man and a woman came and wanted to see the receipt ,,,after they couldnt find anything she tells me it must be the fan, i am like what fan lady, boy i tell ya.. the only thing kept coming to my mind was this story, it got me looking at walmart at a whole differnt way now, i like shopping at walmart by my house cause it aint that bad and has a lot of stuff you cant get anywhere else including target but i hate goiing to other walmarts it is like a war zone and you are the enemy…if i am not by my house and i have a choice between target and walmart, target always win.

I have left Wal-Mart on mor than one occasion whereupon the black guy in front of me was asked for his receipt before her left, and I was not. Even when I had things that weren’t in bags and offered the greeter person my reciept, they have waved it away. I’d rather shop some place that required a full cavity search for every person leaving the store than to shop someplace that treats people like this.

Im With you on this! random searchs or even looking at your reciept is NOT legal you do NOT have to show them your reciept and i have not and will not. i will not shop there unless i must boycotting walmart is a GREAT idea!!!!
