yes you can upgrade the memory

Date January 20, 2005

so much fud on the web. people are starting to receive their macminis now and there’s still some resistance from the x86 community as to downsides of this system. one of the main ones i’ve heard is that: “you can’t upgrade the memory yourself, you have to buy apple’s overpriced memory”.

oh give me a break.

apple does recommend you take it to a dealer and get your upgrade, but you can, i repeat, you can open the box and upgrade the memory yourself on one condition: don’t break anything. once you break something inside, poof! your warranty is null and void. there are tons of posts on the internet on how to “properly” open a macmini case so there’s really no excuse for not doing it properly. (save clumsyness)

so if memory is the main problem, get the base configuration and buy a 1gb module from a third party vendor for much less than the $475 apple is charging. those of us who have used online configurators know that vendors overcharge for memory. (especially dell) i can respect a lot of other opinions such as “it doesn’t do what i want” (fine) or “1 memory slot is bad” (sure), or “i simply hate macs” (pushing it!), yadda yadda yadda. but to say that you can’t upgrade the memory yourself is just plain false. one thing no one can argue with: with the introduction of the macmini, apple has given pc users something else to think about, and that’s a huge difference. people are really reaching to find excuses not to buy this thing: “how can you sell a low budget pc without a keyboard, display or mouse?!!” that’s almost laughable.
